Blue Economy & Sustainability

Leveraging on Blue Economy for Sustainable Development

An executive course focused on blue economy strategy, aquatic resource governance, and sustainable development for coastal and riverine communities.

Course Overview

The Blue Economy represents a vital frontier for economic diversification, environmental sustainability, and inclusive development, especially for coastal and riverine communities. With growing global interest in ocean and aquatic resources, ranging from fisheries, shipping, tourism, and offshore energy to marine biotechnology, the need for informed, coordinated, and sustainable exploitation of blue resources has become urgent. This course is particularly timely in light of constitutional and statutory reforms in Nigeria, including the decentralization of energy and resource governance. It focuses on how subnational governments and institutions can tap into the immense potential of the Blue Economy while ensuring alignment with global sustainability standards and local development goals.

Course Objective

Participants will explore the key components of the Blue Economy, including marine transport and logistics, coastal and inland fisheries, renewable ocean energy, aquaculture, maritime security, and coastal tourism.

The course emphasizes legal and regulatory frameworks, environmental safeguards, infrastructure development, investment attraction, and community participation.

Through expert-led modules, case studies from successful coastal economies, and practical policy labs, participants will learn how to design strategies that harness blue resources for economic growth, job creation, and environmental conservation.

By the end of the programme, participants will be equipped to develop integrated Blue Economy initiatives that reflect democratic values, institutional accountability, and sustainable use of aquatic ecosystems. Leveraging on Blue Economy for Sustainable Development empowers leaders to transform aquatic resource governance into a driver of resilience, innovation, and long-term prosperity.
